Book Review
The London Gardener: Guide and Sourcebook
I was bought this book as a gift a number of years ago and I go back to it time and time again.
The book is divided into 3 parts and it’s an easy read so that you can dip in and out of it. The book format itself is a really neat size that fits easily into a handbag.
The first section looks at gardening in a city location. Elspeth gives tips on all aspects of city gardening including advice on design for small spaces and how to compost. The book contains just enough information to inspire you to have a go yourself or to go on and learn more.
Section two and perhaps my favorite part of the book is a tour of the gardens of London. From the vast expanse of Hyde Park to the smallest gardens in the Square Mile and everything in between. Every year I have grand plans to pick up the book and start exploring all the gardens in sequence following it Elspeth’s footsteps. Starting at the Peabody Gardens near Marble Arch and ending at Osterley Park in Isleworth. I think it would take me a few years to complete as it lists around 250 gardens.
The final section is The Gardener’s Sourcebook. A directory of suppliers which includes city nurseries, gardening accessories suppliers, garden designers, gardening associations, markets and loads more.
So if your struggling for a Christmas present for a keen gardener or you want to inspire a city dweller who thinks there tiny outdoor space isn’t a garden at all then look no further than The London Gardener Guide and Sourcebook by Elspeth Thompson – You can buy in here
